Shoulder Replacement Q&A

What is a shoulder replacement?

A shoulder replacement is a surgical procedure that removes damaged portions of your shoulder joint and replaces them with prosthetic devices. Shoulder replacement surgery restores structure and function to this large flexible joint to ease pain and improve your quality of life.

Dr. Dewanjee is a skilled board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in shoulder replacement procedures. He uses the most advanced tools and techniques to get you the best possible outcomes.

Am I a candidate for shoulder replacement?

Dr. Dewanjee determines if you’re a candidate for shoulder replacement surgery after a comprehensive evaluation. He may consider you a candidate for the procedure if you have severe arthritis or degenerative disease of the shoulder that no longer responds to medical treatment.

You may be a candidate for shoulder replacement If you experience the following symptoms:

  • Severe shoulder pain that limits activity
  • Limited use of your shoulder joint
  • Shoulder weakness
  • Shoulder pain that makes it hard for you to get a good night's rest
  • Medication and physical therapy no longer provide relief from your shoulder pain

Dr. Dewanjee may also consider you a candidate for shoulder replacement if you have a history of shoulder arthroscopy or other procedures that failed to provide significant relief from your shoulder condition.

What are the types of shoulder replacement procedures?

There are a few types of shoulder replacement procedures that Dr. Dewanjee performs:

Partial shoulder replacement

Dr. Dewanjee performs a partial shoulder replacement on patients who have shoulder arthritis that only involves the ball side of their shoulder joint. The type of arthritis may be osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, or it may develop after a fracture or dislocated shoulder.

Total shoulder replacement

During a total shoulder replacement, Dr. Dewanjee replaces both the ball and socket joint of the shoulder. He replaces the ball joint with a metal ball and stem and resurfaces the socket joint, and fits it with a plastic socket.

Total shoulder replacement provides excellent results and is the standard of care for the treatment of advanced osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint.

Reverse total shoulder replacement

A reverse total shoulder replacement is a newer replacement option. During a reverse total shoulder replacement, the orthopedic surgeon switches the ball and socket joints.

That type of surgery works better for patients with large rotator cuff tears who have cuff tear arthropathy, which is shoulder arthritis with a severe rotator cuff tear.

Shoulder replacement can give you back the use of your shoulder. Schedule a consultation at FXRX Inc. by calling the office or booking an appointment online today.
