Knee Replacement Q&A

What is knee replacement?

Knee replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a type of surgery that replaces the damaged and diseased parts of your knee with prosthetic devices.

During knee replacement, Dr. Dewanjee trims, cuts, or shaves the damaged cartilage and bone from your knee and replaces them with artificial biocompatible titanium metal or high-grade plastic parts.

The goal of knee replacement surgery is to restore the structure and function of your knee so you can go back to living your active life without pain or disability.

Am I a candidate for knee replacement?

At FXRX, Inc., Dr. Dewanjee conducts a comprehensive exam to determine if you're a candidate for knee replacement surgery.

He may consider you a candidate for the procedure if you have chronic knee pain from a degenerative condition such as arthritis that no longer responds to traditional medical treatment. He may also consider you a candidate for surgery if your knee pain keeps you from living your active life.

Though knee replacement surgery helps many people, Dr. Dewanjee works closely with you to make sure the surgical procedure is the right choice for your needs.

What are the types of knee replacement procedures?

Dr. Dewanjee is considered one of the best knee replacement surgeons in the Phoenix area. He performs both total knee replacement and partial knee replacement procedures.

Total knee replacement

During a total knee replacement, Dr. Dewanjee replaces all the compartments in your knee. He removes all the damaged cartilage and bone and replaces them with the prosthetic parts. Total knee replacement surgery takes about two hours.

Partial knee replacement

During a partial knee replacement, Dr. Dewanjee only replaces the damaged portion of your knee. A partial knee replacement, also known as a unicompartmental knee replacement, is an excellent alternative knee replacement procedure for a small percentage of patients suffering from knee arthritis.

Your knee has three compartments, and it’s possible to have arthritis in only one compartment. In this situation, Dr. Dewanjee performs the partial knee replacement, leaving the healthy cartilage and bone alone.

A partial knee replacement takes about two hours and usually results in a faster recovery than a total knee replacement. However, most people who need knee replacement surgery benefit more from total knee replacement than partial knee replacement.
